Introduction

Kooikerhondjes are the ultimate sports fanatics. They adore getting out and about for a good run around. This high stamina and prominence in sports comes from their long history as working dogs in Holland.

When not out exercising, these dogs are full of love. Kooikerhondjes are wonderfully loyal and affectionate.

These former hunting dogs are a great addition to a family, especially one which enjoys sports.

Did you know? Kooikerhondjes are brilliant at doggy sports. But don’t just take our word for it - you could even train your pup up to compete in competitions for dog sports.

History

The breed comes from Holland, where they have historically been used as talented aids to hunting. They are most often used in tagging, or to direct ducks into hunting traps. It is believed that the Kooikerhondje breed originates from Nova Scota Duck Tolling Retrievers.

Personality

Kooikerhondjes possess a number of wonderful characteristics. In addition to their energetic nature, these dogs are characteristically well-behaved. They are a highly intelligent breed, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that they are easy to train - be sure to have plenty of treats on hand!

Some Kooikerhondjes have been unsure about other pets, and can take some time to get used to them. As a result, it’s best to have your dog meet these other animals when it is still a puppy. Likewise, this hesitancy can also affect its ability to interact with strangers, so the more people you can introduce it to when it is young, the better.

What’s wonderful about this breed is their calm, kind and happy temperament. All in all, they are definitely a good natured sort. Kooikerhondjes will blend in well to a typical home environment, and bring a joyful, happy buzz along with it, too (just make sure your children aren’t too loud or hyper around it, as this can bring back those feelings of wariness).
