Introduction

The Johnson American Bulldog is one of two varieties of American bulldog. The Johnson variety tends to have larger bones and a broader chest than their Scott American Bulldog counterparts. Even though these dogs are built to work, they are not above being lap dogs, regardless of their size!

History

Around the start of World War two, the American bulldog was in decline. Previously a much loved working dog brought over from Britain in the 17th to 18th century, they were used in Southern USA for catching vermin and wild boar. In spite of their working stock and use as catcher dogs, they were still facing extinction. Come the mid 20th century John D. Johnson had taken an interest in reviving the breed. Along the way, Allen Scott joined, and the pair began to breed the dogs. Johnson took dogs from the South and began breeding them with English bulldogs to make the dog we know today; this is why Johnson bulldogs have the same classic underbite as British Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Scott used Johnson's cache of dogs and bred them with other working bulldogs to create a sleeker, more muscular dog.

Personality

Surprisingly sensitive these dogs can often be seen as shadow dogs, not wanting to be away from their owners or family for extended periods of time. They are highly intelligent and trainable. Johnson American Bulldogs respond best to affectionate yet firm guidance from their handlers. As working dogs, they love to be given a job and have an astounding work ethic, even when it comes to simple tasks.
