The Italian Spinone is one of the oldest breeds native to Italy. Bred as gundogs, their friendly and affectionate nature along with their bushy beards, moustaches, and eyebrows soon led to them becoming household pets and much-loved companions in family homes in Italy and beyond.

History

The exact origins of the Italian Spinone are unknown, but it’s one school of thought that their ancestry may be linked to Setters, another that their heritage may lie with a hound from the Middle Ages, and another that their ancestors came from Russia and were then crossed with Griffons. They were originally bred as working dogs tasked with hunting, pointing, and retrieving game, but their loyal and affectionate characters have seen them adapt to life as family pets with ease.

The Italian Spinone is a fun-loving and laid-back character with an expressive, hairy face that is hard to resist. Renowned for their placid natures and joy of clowning around to entertain their people, they love to get involved in whatever is going on. Intelligent, eager to please, and easy to train, they can be a good choice for first-time owners, provided they are given enough physical and mental stimulation to prevent boredom setting in. Health Issues the Italian Spinone is generally a healthy breed, with known hereditary conditions that may arise including cerebellar ataxia, osteochondritis, and hip dysplasia.
Care Tips Italian Spinoni are low maintenance in terms of grooming, but exercise needs are high. Grooming: an occasional groom will keep wiry hair tidy, but hairy faces will need washed after meals. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: a minimum of two hours of exercise is needed each day for this high-energy breed, with as much time off the lead as possible. They thrive in a country environment but can adapt to town life with appropriate exercise.
