Introduction

Bred as gundogs, Irish Red and White Setters are very intelligent, high-energy dogs that are eager to please. As happy-go-lucky and affectionate characters, they have found their way into the hearts and homes of families around the world, making fun playmates for children and loyal companions for active individuals.

History

The Irish Red and White Setter is the predecessor of the Irish Red Setter and its ancestry dates back as far as the 14th century in Ireland. The popularity of the Irish Red Setter led to a decline in Irish Red and White Setter numbers and they almost vanished, but revival efforts in the 1970s saved the breed from extinction. It remains listed as a vulnerable breed by the UK Kennel Club.

Personality

Lovable, cheerful, and playful, the Irish Red and White Setter is an affectionate, lively, and loyal family pet that forms strong bonds with its people, including children and other pets. Too friendly to be guard dogs, they’ll greet all-comers with a waggy tail after an initial bark. They are intelligent and quick to learn, and although obedient most of the time, they are renowned for having a mind of their own and selective hearing when it suits them.

Care Tips Irish Red and White Setters are relatively low maintenance in terms of grooming, but exercise needs are high. Grooming: a weekly brush and comb will keep tangles at bay. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: one hour of vigorous exercise split into two daily walks is the absolute minimum for this active breed, ideally at least two hours, with room to run and play in a secure garden between walks. For active owners, they make great cycling and jogging companions.
