Introduction

The Hungarian Kuvasz is an affectionate and loyal breed with a striking white coat that at one point in time made it a sought after “fashion dog” although they are renowned throughout history as superb guard dogs. Today, they are much-loved family pets and guardians.

History

The Hungarian Kuvasz is an ancient breed with ancestry believed to date back at least 1200 years and possibly many more. They were bred as herding dogs and the white coat was developed to help shepherds distinguish them from wolves. Some experts believe the breed’s name originates from a Turkish word that means “body guard of the noble”, and it’s said that King Matthias of Hungary took his Hungarian Kuvasz guard dogs with him everywhere and gave Count Dracula (Vlad Dracula) two puppies as a wedding gift. Their popularity then dwindled and the breed almost vanished, but by the 1920s they had made a comeback as much sought after fashion statements among the wealthy.

Personality

Bred as herding dogs, the Hungarian Kuvasz maintains a strong instinct to watch over its “flock” and they are gentle giants dedicated to protecting their people. Large in stature, they are courageous and curious by nature, but sweet-tempered and patient with children, cats, and other small animals, making them well-suited to family life. They are intelligent, independent thinkers which can make training a little tricky as they can be stubborn, but they form strong bonds with their family and are unlikely to stray far from home.
