Introduction

The Griffon Fauve de Bretagne is a breed with a working history that makes it a friendly, active companion and loyal family pet. They have an easy-going character and love to be around people, and with plenty of exercise, they’ll happily curl up at your feet for the rest of the day.

History

The ancestors of the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne were deer, wolf, and hare hunting dogs bred by the Dukes of Brittany in medieval times. Although still used in some parts of France as boar hunting dogs today, the breed is more likely to be found living as a pet in a family home.

Personality

Griffon Fauve de Bretagne are friendly, affectionate, and social dogs. Their gentleness and patience make them ideal family pets and they’ll happily play with children for hours without getting overly-boisterous, although their size could lead to accidentally knocking over toddlers. The natural hunting instinct does mean that early training is needed if they are to share a home with other small animals, and patience is needed in training as they can be easily distracted. They are intelligent and always alert, making them useful watchdogs, but they are likely to greet strangers with same wagging tail as they would family and friends.
