Introduction

The Greenland Dog is a hard-working sled dog that also enjoys life as part of the family when not out in the snow. Bred to work, they need a great deal of exercise to stay healthy and happy, making them unsuited to life as a “pet” in an indoor environment.

History

The exact origins of the Greenland Dog remain unknown, but it’s an ancient breed with ancestry that links it to life with the Siberian people that travelled to the Artic region many thousands of years ago. Very few Greenland Dogs can be found outside of Greenland.

Personality

Independent and often stubborn by nature, the Greenland Dog needs an experienced owner and consistent training. They are affectionate and good-natured and generally get on well with other dogs and people outside of the family, but they can be a little aloof with strangers and may chase small animals. Although the Greenland Dog rarely barks, howling can be an issue, meaning neighbours might not be enamoured. To be a happy dog, the Greenland Dog needs daily work, exercise, and purpose, and as such is best suited to rural life with plenty of outside space, and ideally the company of other working dogs.

Care Tips Greenland dogs are relatively low maintenance in terms of grooming, but exercise needs are very high. Grooming: regular brushing two or three times each week to remove loose hairs. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: two hours of exercise every day is the minimum requirement for this breed and room to roam in a secure garden throughout the day is ideal. If they don’t have sled work to do, the more time a Greenland Dog can spend outdoors walking and playing with their people, the happier they will be.
