Introduction

Gordon Setters have been around for so many years, and the breed prides itself on being the largest of all the Setter dogs out there. These amazing-looking dogs are active, fun-loving, absolutely adorable, and more handsome than anything we can describe. In short, if you’re looking for a heart-warming dog that you’ll fall in love with the moment you lay your eyes on them, it doesn’t get much better than the Gordon Setter.

History

As we said above, Gordon Setters have been around for a long time, with records showing that they first started to appear around the 1620s in Scotland, but back then, they were known as the Black-and-Tan Setter, due to the colour of their coat. They were increased in popularity by the fourth Duke of Gordon, which is whom they changed their name for.

Gordon Setters started exportation around the world around the early 1900s, first showing up in the US around 1842, but the main Kennel Clubs were set up around 1924, and have been around ever since. As of 2021, these are currently the 174th most popular dog breed in the UK, which might not seem very high, but it’s amazing since they’ve been around in human history for so long.

Personality

By far the most lovable traits of the Gordon Setter is the fact they are so beautiful to look at, and so calm by their nature. These dogs are known for being one of the intensely loyal breeds that love nothing more than pleasing you and making sure you’re happy. They truly are a loving member of the family.

That being said, you do need to make sure you’re training your pup properly, so you can live with a balanced, well-rounded pup. This includes proper socialisation training so your pup will get on well with strangers and other dogs, which is important since they can so easily adopt their protective instinct, making them wary of anyone outside the family.

With a bit of investment in the training area, you’ll be left with a very happy pup that has a lot of love to give. Great around children, independent enough to know when to walk away and have their own space, and lovers of the great outdoors and playing, there are few family dog breeds better than the Gordon Setter!
