Introduction

There are actually two types of German Spitz that come under the same breed name. These are the Klein and the Mittel, the Mittel being larger in size, but apart from this difference, both types of German Spitz are exactly the same. The German Spitz are renowned for their loyalty and compassion for their owners, and their affectionate, fun-loving nature makes them ideal family pets that get along with everyone in a great, heart-warming way!

History

German Spitzes have records that date back as far as the Stone Age when they existed in a part of the world known as Pomerania, which today is the Germany and Poland area. Fast forward to 1450, and there’s an existing letter that details the social use and companionship of German Spitzes.

Over the years, these pups have been used for a variety of reasons whether that’s companionship in the Royal Family, or as agile, nimble hunting dogs. Nowadays, these dogs are still incredibly popular throughout Germany, the UK, and much of Europe, but not so much outside of this area.

Personality

With a German Spitz, you get the best of both worlds. While incredibly affectionate and eager to please their owners, they also have an independent streak where they don’t need to spend a ton of time with their owners, although they do love it. Just make sure they have lots of toys to play with and space to run around in.

Since German Spitzes have a hunting background, they have a rather high prey drive, so will happily start chasing small birds and vermin while you’re out and about. If you have a cat or introduce a cat, you’re also going to want to be careful and ensure you’re training your dog properly to not be aggressive.
