Introduction

The German Longhaired Pointer is one of the most prized and valuable dog breeds to come out of Germany, not in terms of monetary value, but as working dogs that were respected and essential for German life. Nowadays, with the changes to the modern world, the need for working dogs has basically vanished, but German Longhaired Pointers are still around in the form of companionship dogs which are starting to gain popularity all over the world.

History

As the name suggests, German Longhaired Pointers come from German origins and are believed to have been around since the 4th Century where they were known as ‘bird dogs’, because they hunted birds. There are several reports that link these dogs to the classic ‘silk dogs’, which originated from Tibet, but the evidence isn’t solid.

Today, German Longhaired Pointers are still used as gun dogs across Germany and have also found their way into competing in field trials because of their active and sporty ways. However, breeding is still slim, and you need to go on a waitlist with a breeder if you want to own one for yourself.

Personality

German Longhaired Pointers have all the standard good-boy traits you’d expect in a companionship dog. They’re friendly, gentle, loving, and highly intelligent, but do have tendencies to be shy and aggressive towards strangers if not socially trained from a young age.

Due to this breed’s pack mentality, you should also not leave your dog alone on their own for too long, otherwise you’ll have a lot of barking to deal with. You also need to make sure you’re providing them with lots of exercise since leaving them to sit at home on their own all day will just make them miserable and destructive.
