Introduction

Entlebucher Mountain Dogs are fantastic dogs, medium build and strong, and overall make for lovely family dogs. However, while a popular Switzerland dog, the breed has only just started to be exported out into other parts of the world, such as the UK and the US. While rare, these dogs are still leaving a big impression on our hearts!

History

There are main breeds of mountain dog in the world, the Entlenucher being one of them. It’s rumoured that these dogs were first brought to Switzerland by Roman settlers over 2000 years ago, and while they lasted for centuries as working dogs, their numbers plummeted after breeds like German Shepherds became popular, so low they nearly became extinct!

However, at the turn of the 1900s, a breeder by the name of Franz Schertenleib dedicated himself to collecting all the pups he could find and breeding their numbers back. Two decades later, a club was set up in Switzerland to set the breed standards, and they have been around since, although still rather rare outside of the country.

Personality

Due to the pack mentality that Entlebucher Mountain Dogs possess, it’s common for these dogs to become protective of their owners and family, and defensive around strangers and other dogs. They can sometimes come across as aggressive, and hone their loud, dominating bark to scare off intruders. Depending on the dog, you may need constant socialisation training to alleviate problems.

It’s also important to note that Entlebucher Mountain Dogs are extremely active and demand a lot of exercise. You will need to walk and play with your dog daily, but love engaging in activities like hiking, playing fetch, running, walking, tracking, and so on. Entlebucher Mountain Dogs are great around children above the age of five but will need to be assertively yet gently trained if around younger children.
