Introduction

There’s no doubt that English Setters are one of the most popular family dogs out there, and have been for decades, and that’s for the simple reason that they tick all the boxes. They’re good-looking and elegant, kind and calm natured, and absolutely love to please their owners.

History

As we said before, English Setters are one of the oldest and most traditional gun dog breeds from England, and there are records that show they have been around humans since before the 14th Century. However, they probably weren’t the same dogs as we see today since they have commonly been bred with spaniels to improve their hunting traits even more.

However, it wasn’t until around the 19th Century that Setters were popular companionship dogs amongst aristocrats in the UK. Because of their popularity, they were bred into breeds like the Laverack Setters and Llewellin Setters, and have since remained popular as a family dog.

Personality

There’s no denying that English Setters are a calm and collective breed. They’re affectionate and loving, and adore exercise and playing, making them great to have around your family. However, they do have some guard dog instinct in them still, so they may be a little wary around strangers within practising the proper socialisation training from a young age.

Because of this nature, English Setters aren’t very good as indoor dogs because they love to be outside and chase things. That also means, however, they do have a nature to chase small animals that could be seen as game, especially cats and the sorts. The chances are you’ll be gifted with a dead animal every now and then when this doggie is around!
