Introduction

The English Coonhound. Comprising of two breed lines, the Black and the Tan Coonhounds, these native American dogs are highly valued within the working dog world for their incredible sense of smell, but are now just as popular as family pets, especially in the US, but not so much in Europe.

However, that doesn’t mean that they’re non-existent, and there are still plenty of families that are loving the adorable and highly intelligent nature of this dog which make ideal pets for experienced dog owners.

History

Despite the name, the English Coonhound actually originates from the United States and has been a working dog within the country since around the 1700s. This is due to the pup’s amazing scent tracking abilities, making them incredibly valuable when it comes to tracking down prey, but more recently these pups have found themselves a home as great companion dogs.

Although being around for so long, it wasn’t until 1945 that the breed was recognised by the American Kennel Club, but surprisingly, the breed has only just been recognised by the UK Kennel Club after 2018, which can make finding puppies anywhere outside the US rather difficult.

Personality

Although taking the working nature of this dog into account, English Coonhounds are actually a fairly docile breed, especially once they’ve been exercised and taken for their daily walk. Since these dogs have a very strong pack instinct, they are great to have around larger families and children, but not so great around small pets, because you know, the hunting instinct.

Now, the only other things you’re going to need to think about is the fact that these dogs love to bark, and can have an incredibly loud bark and love to howl, so if you’re living in an apartment or near to neighbours, this may not be the most subtle dog to have around.
