Introduction

What happens when you mix two of the most popular small and most lovable dog breeds out there? You of course end up with a Chorkie. While not officially a purebred breed just yet, there are Dog Mums and Dads around the world who have fallen for these tiny bundles of joy, and it’s not hard to see why these dogs make such fantastic companions.

History

Since Chorkies fall into the designer dog bracket, there’s not much history to share. The dogs first started to appear in the 1990s throughout the US and have been growing in popularity ever since. It was registered by official doggie organisations, like the American Kennel Club and the Designer Canine Registry, around the same time.

However, the history of the Chorkie’s parent breeds, the Chihuahua and the Yorkshire Terrier, are very well-documented. Chihuahuas have reportedly been around in countries like Mexico since 100AD, and Yorkshire Terriers, native dogs to England, have been popular working and companion dogs since the early 1990s.

Personality

Chorkies are an extremely loyal breed, so while they’ll give you a ton of affection and love, and adore nothing more than relaxing on your lap or napping on the sofa next to you, these pups can be slightly aggressive to strangers and other dogs. They’re only trying to look out for you, but this is why these dogs are not really ideal if you have children who will bring friends over and so on.

However, whether you’re a couple, a single pringle, or elderly, these dogs are ideal. They’re also super-intelligent, so make sure you’re stimulating your pooch’s mind with lots of fun games and playtimes.
