There’s no denying that a Chinook is a born-and-bred American dog through and through. Chinooks were originally bred by crossing a Northern Husky dog with a North Pole dog. Originally bred for sledge pulling, Chinooks are fairly rare these days, despite being such great and obedient pups.

The history of the Chinook is an interesting one. Bred from the Northern Husky and North Pole dog breeds, there was only one dog of its kind back in the 1900s when it first appeared. This pup was owned by Admiral Byrd who led an expedition to the South Pole in 1927, in which the dog accompanied him.

However, as time moved on, there are only a handful of dedicated Chinook breeders in the world, especially found in the US, which has made the Chinook a rather rare and exclusive breed. For example in 1966, there were only 125 of these dogs in existence. Still, they were officially recognised by organisations like the American Kennel Club in 1991.

Due to the Chinook’s highly intelligent nature, they can be a pain to keep under control. They love digging holes and playing, and while they don’t bark a lot, they do make ‘woo’ howls, as a husky would. What’s more, while they’re a super gentle and loving breed, they can get a bit apprehensive around other dogs and strangers.

This is why it’s so important to take the time to train your Chinook well from a young age. This means making sure you place yourself as the alpha in your house and you don’t let your Chinook become the head of the pack. If they think they’re in charge, then you’ll have problems. However, Chinooks are eager to please as long as you get off on the right foot!
