Introduction

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are just fantastic. Large, agile, muscular, and an absolute joy to cuddle with and be around, these are one of those dogs you just can’t help but fall in love with. Traditionally a working dog, these retrievers are typically happy 99% of the time and have a tendency to want to please you whenever they can!

History

As the name suggests, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were selectively bred in the Chesapeake Bay area in the US at some point in the 1800s. The first reports go back as far as 1807 when two puppies were saved from a sinking ship and then given the rescuers as a gratitude present.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are known for their love of water, and since they were used for hunting, this made them fantastic working dogs. The breed is very popular throughout the US, ranking at 43 in the AKC chart and holds the role as the official dog breed of Maryland.

Personality

Bred to be a water dog, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are happiest when around water. If you have a lake near your house or a pond in your back garden, guess where your pup is going to try and spend a lot of its time! That being said, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are very playful and require a ton of exercise, so make sure you’re ready for lots of hikes!

If you can satisfy around 40 minutes of moderate exercise a day, then you’ll have a pooch that loves sleeping and relaxing on the sofa the rest of the time. Just make sure you train your pup socially with both other dogs and humans to avoid your Chesapeake Bay Retriever getting nervous or wary when around them!
