Introduction

The best way to remember the Cesky Terrier is the fact that it’s the Terrier breed that comes from Czechoslovakia. There seems to be a breed of Terrier from every country these days! However, that doesn’t make the Cesky Terrier any less special, especially when you get to enjoy all the active traits of a traditional Terrier, but typically in a much calmer, more affectionate way.

History

Cesky Terriers started to appear in Czechoslovakia around the 1900s but really started to come into their own around 1948 where hairdresser and Terrier breeder Frantisek Horak designed the cute Terrier haircut that this breed still has to this day. Originally, this cut was for function, allowing the dogs to run through the woods while they worked without catching on brambles and twigs.

By work, we mean that Terriers were bred originally for hunting, which they were great at due to their small yet agile build. Nowadays, through selective breeding, the aggressiveness of the Cesky Terrier has faded, and all that is left is a docile and loving pup.

Personality

Cesky Terriers are by far one of the calmest of all Terrier breeds. Many people think the Terrier to be quite a yappy and loud dog, but not this one. Over the years, these pups have become calmer and calmer, which is why they’re so often given as dogs to elderly people who want calm environments or even being used as therapy dogs.

However, that doesn’t mean the Cesky lacks the energy levels of a traditional Terrier. While not needing a lot of exercise, these dogs do love to play and run around, so it’s always a plus if you have a nice big garden for them to run around. Due to the passive nature of this dog, they get on great with adults, children, and other pets alike!
