Introduction

By far one of the most beautiful balls of fluff and cuteness on the planet, the Canadian Eskimo Dog is a heart-stopper with just how adorable they are. There’s no doubt these dogs are one of the most traditional Canadian dog breeds out there, and while gentle and affectionate, they are also insanely strong, especially when you consider they were used as original sled dogs.

Nowadays, these are just lovely dogs thanks to their gentle, wholesome heritage, and are very pack orientated. If you’re in this pup’s family, then expect a lot of love. If you want to enter and become part of the pack, then you need to be prepared to put a lot of work into your relationship.

History

The heritage of Canadian Eskimo Dogs goes way, way back to traditional Eskimo times (which is about 4000 years ago), of which there were, of course, no records. However, it’s suggested that these pups came from wolves or are related to Greenland dogs, which are also found in Arctic regions.

Back then, these dogs were used for pulling sleds and hunting, but they were notably cared for by the woman of the Eskimo tribes, which is where they get their gentle, playful attitudes from, much unlike the attitudes of traditional hunting dogs found elsewhere in the world.

These pups were officially registered with kennel clubs around the 1980s.

Personality

Since these Canadian Eskimo dogs have been affiliated with humans for such a long time, we tend to have a very close relationship with them, but you need to work at it. This means spending lots of time with your dog to satisfy their pack instinct, and they need a ton of exercise, typically up to 15 miles per week, or 45 minutes per day.

Canadian Eskimo dogs are also extremely intelligent and eager to please, which makes training these dogs super easy, and not a problem when around children. The only thing you do want to be aware of is your dog around other dogs since they aren’t part of your pack and may be seen as a threat.
