Introduction

There are few dogs more beautiful and loving than the Canaan. Smart, active, and affectionate, it’s easy to see why these pups have been a part of Eastern culture for as long as they have been. These dogs are incredibly low maintenance, fun to be around, and aren’t prone to health problems. Such hardy little pups!

We love the Canaan for so many reasons, especially since they’re said to have evolved from the Indian wolf, which just makes for an even more interesting dog. What more could you ask for from such a great pet?

History

Canaans may sound like an odd breed name that many people scrunch their faces up to, but they’re actually one of the oldest breeds out there and have literally been around for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Canaans have evolved originally from Indian wolves, but they have come a long way since there, and are now regarded as being some of the most gentle companion pets around.

Back in the day, these dogs were used across Israel as working dogs (herding and guarding sheep flocks and so on), but also as messengers due to their rapid agility and ability to withstand and work in harsher climates than most dogs could put up with. They were eventually recognised by the AKC back in 1997.

Personality

There’s no doubt that the Canaan is one of the most intelligent breeds of dog out there, and their working dog traits still shimmer through here and there. For example, Canaans can be fairly shy around strangers but can be protective if the need arises. What’s more, these dogs are usually great around children, as long as they are introduced to them from a young age.

Make sure you’re spending lots of time training this dog with a selection of activities because they will become bored quickly. This means daily exercises, both physical and mental to ensure this pup is happy and positively stimulated.
