Introduction

As the name suggests, the Bullmastiff was bred by crossing Mastiffs with Bulldogs which undoubtedly birthed one of the most beautiful dogs we’ve ever laid eyes on. Sure, Bullmastiffs look mean due to their lean and muscular build, but mostly they’re incredibly affectionate and docile, especially when you invest time in developing a relationship with them.

If you’re a strong and assertive owner, then a Bullmastiff could be the ideal doggie for you since Bullmastiffs thrive on their working instinct origins where they want respect and to be respected by those they love.

History

Records show that Bullmastiffs were bred all the way in the 1700s using strict guidelines where Bulldogs and Mastiffs needed to be bred for three generations before they were recognised as purebreds. To begin with, they were used throughout South Africa to help track down poachers, as well as playing roles in the police and army.

However, over the centuries, the Bullmastiff has become much more a companion dog that has incredibly soft and loving sides to them, although that protective, working side is something you’re going to need to think about.

Personality

Due to their breeding, Bullmastiffs need discipline. If allowed to remain untamed and to become alpha in your family, it’s quickly going to run riot. A Bullmastiff owner needs to be firm and respectful to their dog, laying down the ground rules and not letting them give way with anything.

However, training is difficult, it’s just necessary. These dogs are smart and will react to changes in the tone of your voice, and so on. What’s more, Bullmastiffs are great around children and strangers, as long as they don’t feel threatened. Just make sure you socialise them from a puppy age and you’ll have a very happy pooch!
