Introduction

The Briard is a classic French working dog, originally used for working on farms as herders, but also as a guard dog, despite being small in size. However, despite the Briard’s working history, nowadays the breed likes nothing more than to sit and how and relax with their loving families.

That being said, the running around and having fun instinct is still prevalent, so prepare to get your wellies out to go for some nice long walks in the countryside or local parks to scratch that itch. At least a bit of fresh air is good for us all!

History

There’s evidence that shows Briards were used on farms and throughout the animal agriculture sectors of France as far back as the 1300s, so there’s no doubt these pups have been around for a long time. However, as time moved forward, the breed was also used for other activities like hunting, pack hunting, and tracking.

They were even used during the First World War to help find wounded soldiers so the medics could get to them easily. It wasn’t long after, in 1922 when the breed was registered by the American Kennel Club. However, the breed is still most popular in France.

Personality

Due to the history of the Briard, there’s no denying that it’s one of the most loyal and protective dogs out there that’s an absolute joy and pleasure to have around thanks to their high-energy way of living life. By nature, this is a dog that will go above and beyond to please its owners, and all it asks is for a bit of love in return.

However, while part of the tribe, Briards do have an independent streak in them, especially when it comes to chasing prey like small animals and cats. The best way to overcome this problem is to make sure you’re training your dog early on to listen to your commands to stay.
