Introduction

Braque D'Auvergne is a classic French gun dog breed that’s elegant, smart, lovable, and overall just makes for a fantastic pup. Having been a working dog for the last few centuries, Braque D'Auvergne dogs are really easy to train, and while you can still use them for work, they also make for great modern-day companion pets.

Braque D'Auvergne is the definition of a loyal gun dog. Out in the field, while hunting, these dogs are absolute beasts focused solely on their mission. However, once they’re at home they’re as soft and as affectionate as any other breed. You truly do get the best of both worlds.

History

There are records for the Braque D'Auvergne breed that dates back to around the 1700s when they started to be bred as gun dogs in France, but the real history of where they actually came from before this remains a mystery, but we know hunting has always been a part of their past.

Even the name ‘Braque’ means to point or to aim, like a gun. Throughout the years, the dogs have slowly made their way around the world and are now popular all over Europe and throughout the US. They were officially recognised by the United Kennel Club back in 2006.

Personality

Braque D'Auvergnes require so much exercise that typically averages around 60 minutes per day, or 15 miles per week. This is because they were hunting dogs and still have the instinct that they need to run around and get it out of their system, so if you’re an active person, this could be the ideal dog for you.

However, Braque D'Auvergnes are safe to be around and have plenty of love to give. So, as long as you’re spending lots of quality time with your pup (around an hour or two a day), you’re going to have a very happy dog. They also get on with children, as long as the children respect the dog’s personal space.
