Introduction

There are only two native hunting dogs from Italy, and the Bracco Italiano is one of them. Not much has changed for this breed of dog over the last few centuries, and are still used in hunting activities to this day. However, the companionship trait of this dog is what has introduced it to family love, and they make fantastic friends at that.

What’s more, due to the speed, strength, and intelligence of this pup breed, they make for amazing show dogs, so if you’re looking for a bit of competition, this could be the breed to take on that journey.

History

The Bracco Italiano really is one of the most ancient dog breeds out there, and there’s evidence (in paintings) shows that they were living and working with people from as far back as the 4th and 5th Century. Of course, going so far back makes it impossible to actually trace the heritage of this dog, but the resemblance is uncanny.

Over the years, these dogs have grown in popularity throughout Europe, and eventually the world, but surprisingly was only registered in organisations like the United Kennel Club in 2006, and it was only by around 2010 they were seen competing in shows and performances.

Personality

A truly wonderful companion dog that will genuinely become one of your best friends (perhaps closer than you’ll be to most humans!), but this doesn’t mean the hunting instinct of this dog has faded out. You’ll need to make sure you have a strong, tall fence around your property, otherwise, you’re going to be dealing with an escapee once it catches a scent.

Bracco Italianos are more than happy when given lots of attention and allowed to spend lots of time around the tribe. Bracco Italianos also tend to do well around children and strangers, but always give supervision when they’re around other small pets. Especially cats.
