Introduction

Border Terriers are nothing short of adorable. Traditionally bred as working dogs, these pups are now popular in households all over the world, and there’s no doubt this breed still holds some of the high-energy traits they were originally born to share. However, due to their fun-loving and loyal nature, Border Terriers are renowned for being one of the best companion dog breeds around.

History

Border Terriers have been around for a long time. Records show that the breed started to appear around the 1700s when they were bred to help hunting efforts across the UK. These terriers are perfect because they have legs long enough to keep up with the horses and hunters but were small enough to dive down fox holes to chase them out.

These lovely pups were first officially registered by the English Kennel Club and then the American Kennel Club shortly afterwards during the 1930s. Nowadays, Border Terriers remain working dogs but are favoured to keep at home or take part in dog shows.

Personality

Endlessly playful. That’s the best way to describe a Border Terrier. There’s never a point throughout the day when this pooch isn’t going to want to play or exercise, which is ideal if you have children or need a running companion. Terriers also love to chew (which comes from their hunting instinct) so make sure you get them lots of toys.

However, this hunting instinct is something you need to be aware of. Border Terriers are wiley little pups, and if there’s a chance of them to escape or explore, such as leaving a door open, the chances are they’re going to take it. What’s more, these dogs are pack animals, so if you’re leaving them on their own for too long without interaction, they can end up getting a little destructive.

They will also chase any small animals when given a chance!
