Introduction

If asked to picture your idea of a working dog, the chances are your mind would wander over to the Border Collie. The most iconic sheepdog herding breed in the world, Border Collies have always been a firm favourite among families and professionals alike.

However, while exceptional at what they do, Collies are so much more than just working field dogs. Known as one of the most intelligent breeds, these dogs are eager to please their owners, love being the centre of attention, and are ideal companions for people of all ages.

History

Border Collies are some of the most familiar dogs in the UK, and there’s recorded evidence of them that dates back as far as the 1800s. Back then, they were known as Scotch Sheep Dogs, which shows that even back then, these beautiful dogs were still used in the fields of the British countryside.

The Border Collie we know and love were bred from another breed of sheepdog, but Collies were preferred because they had much less of a tendency to bite or bark at the sheep while working. Officially, Collies were a registered breed under the AKC as of 1995.

Personality

You can’t not love a Border Collie. You’ll find the common personality traits among this breed that showcase them as purely energetic and lovers of running around. However, these are one truly intelligent breed that is very quick to learn and eager to please their owners in the best possible way.

If you’re looking for a best friend and one of the most befriending companion dogs you’ve ever known, there are few breeds better than the Border Collie.
