Introduction

The Bich-Poo is a very new breed, as it has only existed since the late 1990s. Its parent breeds, however, go way back to the 16th century. Friendly, intelligent and eager to please, the Bich-Poo inherits its parents best features - ideal for first-time owners! It is worth researching both the Bichon Frisse and the Poodle to make sure you fully understand this dog, as it’s rare that you will get a perfect 50/50 split. Generally, though, the breeds share a similar temperament, unlike lots of crossbreeds whose parents can be polar opposites.

History

Breeders in Australia set out to create the perfect companion dog suitable for allergy sufferers. The result was a teddy bear-like Bich-Poo! It didn’t take long until the UK and US joined in by breeding their own. The breed may have existed naturally before the 1990s. However, as far as we are aware, this was the first intentional breeding programme. It isn’t recognised as a breed in its own right yet, but this is quite common for new hybrids.

Personality

The Bich-Poo combines the intelligence of the Poodle with the playfulness of the Bichon Frise. The result is a friendly and loyal pooch that follows its owners every move. It hates being on its own, so don’t be surprised when they follow you from room to room! One downside is that they are prone to yapping. Commonly known as the ‘little dog syndrome,’ the Bich-Poo attempts to make up for its small size by intimidating strangers with its bark. However, this is easily solved by socializing your dog early, ideally within its first six months.
