Introduction

It’s difficult not to fall head over paws in love with this teddy bear breed! The designer Bernedoodle is a mix of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. The result is an adorable and extremely healthy pooch with a high life expectancy. (Up to 18 years!) It comes in three sizes: toy, miniature and standard.

History

The intentional breeding of the Bernedoodle began in 2003 when a woman named Sherry Rupke set out to make the perfect companion dog. Her programme has proved to be successful as the demand for this pooch grows and grows. Whilst its history is very recent, its two parent breeds date back to the 15th century.

Bernese mountain dogs come from Switzerland, where their strength was used to pull sledges of trading goods from place to place. The poodle developed in Germany as a water-hunting breed. Crossbreeding programmes often use Poodles because they barely have any health issues and are incredibly suited to being a companion pet.

Personality

The best features of both breeds shine through in the Bernedoodle. Whilst there are variations from dog to dog, they tend to inherit intelligence from the Poodle and a bouncy, happy temperament from the Bernese Mountain Dog. They adore being around their family and should never be left alone for too long or they will develop separation anxiety. Sometimes the Bernedoodle is stubborn and won’t follow commands. But, with effective training, this trait is easily diluted. It comes as no surprise that they make successful therapy dogs as their cartoonish grin brings instant joy to everyone they meet.
