Introduction

True to its Terrier blood, the Australian Silky Terrier is small in size, but it makes up for this in its bold personality. This pooch is known to be fearless, prey-driven and alert at all times.

As they are commonly known as the Silky Terrier, many are not aware of the dog’s Australian heritage. At first glance, it is easy to mistake the Silky for the Yorkshire Terrier. Silky Terriers tend to be of a more muscular build and are more curious.

History

Australian dogs are typically workers (either hunters or transporters of cattle), but the Australian Silky makes an ideal household pet. They are suited to living in flats and apartments and don’t require as much exercise as other breeds.

When World War Two servicemen returned home from down under, they took their treasured Terriers back with them. It wasn’t long until the word was spread and more and more American households wanted to get their hands on one. Their popularity has increased and they are now common in many countries.

Personality

Described in their breed standard as ‘keenly alert and active,’ the Australian canine is not one to stay quiet around strangers. Their hunter heritage is likely to blame for their feisty nature. Once they become familiar with a human, though, they are affectionate and love spending time with them.

Early training and socialization are recommended for this pooch, otherwise, they will show aggression to strangers.
